Kashi Niwas is envisioned as a family home in the vibrant city of Varanasi, on a 3600 sqft west-facing plot. A family of six, including a young couple, their elderly mother, and three children, wanted a house that balanced tradition with contemporary living. Their requirements were clear—the ground floor had to have separate accesses to family and visitors for a home office, staff and guest spaces, the first and second floors to function as a private duplex for the family, while the third floor to be a recreational retreat with a gym, theatre, and party terrace. Being deeply rooted in tradition, they desired the house to be fully Vaastu compliant.
The design concept emerges from a dialogue between tradition and problem-solving. Varanasi is layered with timeless stone cladded buildings, narrow lanes and courtyards that breathe life into dense neighbourhoods. The requirement for being Vastu compliant in an edge-to-edge plot served a challenge to organise and plan the spaces, what emerged is a home that is anchored against a central open-to-sky space offering light and ventilation in these tight boundaries.
To introduce parking and giving an access, which is Vastu governed required to play with volumes at the ground floor. Materials are chosen to resonate with the city– warm red, and beige sandstone that provide a timeless character to the home. The Mandir in the north east corner of the site is treated as a symbolic sculptural volume. The concept aims to tie together traditional living with modern amenities in a timeless family home.
The brief laid the vertical zoning of the house clearly while Vastu rules guided the placement of spaces and rooms at each floor. The central courtyard ensures ample light and ventilation into all the spaces, most of the studio explorations went towards resolving the entryway to the house - a west facing site with an edge to edge building and an entry from the north court invited complex, yet interesting structural possibilities. What resulted was a structure with stub columns, a 6m cantilever for the parking and columns that reduce in span when they come down to give way for the entryway in the north court. The ongoing construction hopes to achieve a home that is harmonious to the context, allows material and light to come together as a unique experience.
