The redevelopment of Kansas City International Airport (KCI) is the largest single infrastructure project in Kansas City's history. Built to replace the existing, overcrowded terminals with a single, highly sustainable 1.1-million-square-foot building, the project significantly increases passenger capacity with a design deeply informed by city residents. The new terminal reimagines the passenger experience, elevating the airport into a place that is inclusive and accessible to all.
The new terminal brings KCI into the future with all airline operations under one roof, and a 6,000-space parking garage just steps away, creating a seamless journey for arrivals and departures alike. The airport can now serve more than 16 million travelers per year with 39 gates, and a layout that enables the facility to expand by another 11 gates in the future.
The I-shaped building encompasses two levels: the upper for departing passengers and the lower for arrivals, each with its own access road and curb. Beyond security, two parallel concourses with retail at the center are linked by a pedestrian passage that provides sweeping views of the airfield. All post security spaces are on the same level—a design move that creates an easier journey for all passengers.
The Kansas City airport terminal embodies outstanding inclusivity and accessibility. Rooted in community engagement since 2017, architects, planners, and engineers collaborated with local stakeholders to reflect the city's values. Thousands of residents across six districts contributed their aspirations, emphasizing comfort, convenience, and a welcoming environment for all. Following a city council resolution, the terminal was mandated to be the world's most accessible, influencing every aspect of its design.
Signage features large, readable fonts and wheelchair-van-accessible curbs, and all service points are set at wheelchair-friendly heights. Restrooms include nursing rooms, family facilities, and spacious stalls. Additionally, the terminal includes large All-Gender restrooms with privacy partitions, motorized changing tables, and animal relief areas. Notable amenities like a sensory room for children with disabilities and a quiet room for meditation and prayer cater to diverse needs. The Air Travel Experience simulator offers pre-trip practice in a mock aircraft cabin, ensuring comfort for nervous or inexperienced flyers.
