An open and secure courtyard-type nursery school where children’s activities can be glimpsed from town.
◼️ Safe and enclosed layout created by 4 buildings
・ By arranging four wooden buildings with different functions around a courtyard in a windmill shape, we created an open and highly secure education and childcare space.
・ The layout allows for good visibility among children and teachers across the corridors, rooms and gardens and it is easy to go back and forth through the corridors.
・ The teacher’s room has good vantage points over the surroundings . Access to the garden is through the entrance gate in front of the teacher’s room to ensure a definite security check.
・ Vehicles enter and exit the parking lot from the road on the west side thereby achieving complete pedestrian and vehicular separation on the school grounds.
・ Using the arched bridge to connect the corridors over the entrance court, the courtyard corridors’ internal circulation(without shoes) can be isolated from the general grounds external circulation (with shoes).
◼️ A nursery school that blends in with the local landscape
・ The appearance will be calm and familiar with the surrounding scenery so that the local residents will extend their affection towards the nursery school for a long period of time.
・ From the outside, one can catch a glimpse of children’s activities through the gap between the buildings and from within the garden, the children and teachers have a view of the surrounding mountains over the roof.
◼️ A space that changes with the children as they grow up
・ We purposefully designed the buildings’ scale and finish along with the quality of space and landscape to change little by little according to the developmental stage of the child.
・ By creating a space centered around the courtyard and corridor along with the presence of an arched bridge at the entrance court, an environment where children can easily form an identity naturally with the place was created.
◼️ A space for childcare support that is open to the community
・ The local childcare support room is located next to the “Machikado Hiroba” that allows locals to drop in from outside easily and it functions independently from the nursery school.
・ It is also possible to use a part of the local childcare support room as a temporary childcare space.
・ “Machikado Hiroba” located on the northwest corner of the site which is close to Inokami Fureai Park, serves as a pocket park that allows locals to access it freely.
◼️ Sustainable environmental planning utilizing the courtyard layout
・ We prioritized the space where children commonly use in a sunny place facing the south.
・ In the summer, the north-south openings are used to actively promote natural ventilation, while in the winter, the enclosure is used to protect and retain warmth in the garden from seasonal winds.
・ Enclosing the lively garden within the architecture also serves as a noise countermeasure for the surrounding residential area.
◼️ Reduction of earthworks by devising the layout plan
・Centered on the stable ground where the existing nursery school once stood, columnar ground improvement method was deployed and a high RC foundation was constructed on it to minimize excavation works.
・By utilizing the courtyard type layout, the high RC foundation can also be used as a retaining wall, therefore a 75cm level increase can be achieved with minimum cost and construction period.
・ The paddy field on the west side of the site will be used mainly as a parking lot to minimize embankment work.
