Kalverpolder Watchtower
On the edge of the historical Zaanse Schans sits a solid oak watchtower that overlooks the surrounding natural and industrial landscape. The tower marks the beginning of a footpath that passes through the Kalverpolder, a fascinating nature area with a long and rich history. Through its interesting construction it offers a striking appearance visible from the paths and squares for those visiting the Zaanse Schans.
Throughout the design process DaF-architects always responds to the context and history of the area. This site is located next to the loamy bogs & broad waterways of Kalverpolder, and the wooden industry mills along the Zaan. The tower celebrates both the unique view and the timber construction of the traditional windmills - with a contemporary twist. The theme of peasant production and material economy also served as a basis for the design, with much of the wood being sawn by local sawmill 'Het Jonge Schaap'.
The design was developed using a 1:20 scale oak model upon which mill builder Bart Nieuwenhuijs and his colleagues prefabricated the tower we see today. Traditional mill-craft building techniques such as mortise & tenon joints and wooden pegs were used throughout the design.
The watchtower stands out and, at the same time, fits into the context of the landscape. As you walk up, the beautiful views glimpsed through the construction vary and differ with every step.
