Kalluveedu – A Contemporary Home Rooted in Tradition
By Shils Design Studio
Located in the serene landscape of Kalluketty, a small town in Kanyakumari, Tamil Nadu, Kalluveedu is a residence that blends tradition with thoughtful modernity. The name itself is a tribute to the place it stands on and the material that defines its character: Kallu, the local term for brick. Designed for a six-member family, the home addresses not just spatial needs, but emotional and cultural connections to the land and lifestyle.
Set on an elevated site surrounded by lush greenery, the house is strategically positioned at the center of the plot, allowing for a generous buffer of landscape on all sides. This siting not only enhances views and ventilation but also gives the home a grounded yet open presence within its natural context.
The architectural language of the home draws deep inspiration from the traditional houses of Kanyakumari, reinterpreting their logic in a modern format. A strong central axis forms the spatial spine, flanked by functional zones on either side. On entering, one is welcomed by a Kota stone-clad sit-out with a thinnai, a nod to the region’s vernacular homes. A large teak wood door with minimal grooved detailing opens into a partially double-height living room, introducing scale, light, and drama.
The ground floor accommodates a living room and TV area, a guest bedroom, a dining space, a kitchen, and an additional bedroom. The dining zone is modest yet efficient, featuring a tall crockery unit, a wash counter, and is subtly divided from the stairwell using a custom wood and steel grill, allowing transparency without visual clutter. The staircase, constructed as an RCC folded plate, is finished with wood-textured tiles and a minimal handrail. A large window at the landing floods the core with daylight, while service elements like electrical panels and CCTV units are neatly tucked beneath.
The kitchen is defined by its white nano-white countertop, wood-texture laminated base cabinets, and sleek overhead white cabinets. Sleek handles and white tile backsplash contribute to a clean, efficient workspace that is both well-lit and ventilated.
The first floor houses the master bedroom, parents’ bedroom, and a small family lounge. The master bedroom features a minimal wooden headboard, a private balcony, and a tiny louvered window that peeks into the living room, offering a passive visual connection. Sit-outs and balconies at this level further enhance openness, letting in natural light, air, and occasional rain.
The material palette is intentionally restrained, with exposed brick cladding, Kota stone, white and grey walls, beige tiles, and warm wooden details defining the aesthetic. The overall design style is minimal, tropical, and rooted, with climatic responsiveness integrated through clerestory louvered windows, cross ventilation, and open-to-sky moments.
Kalluveedu is a reflection of quiet resilience. It embraces tradition not through mimicry, but through principles of openness, simplicity, climate sensitivity, and deep cultural grounding. It is a home shaped by family, crafted by context, and made timeless through design.
