The building is located on a small road that runs along the riverbank. Its main facade faces south, overlooking a stunning green landscape stretching along both sides of the river. From elevated or distant viewpoints, the structure blends into the surrounding greenery, and its presence is barely noticeable until you get close enough. And once you do, you're drawn to explore what the inside looks like. This is exactly the intention we aimed for when designing the project – a serene, captivating space that inspires curiosity and discovery.
The homeowner’s demand was designing a building that combines a coffee business with a private living area for the family. The design priorities were focused on the business area while ensuring convenient access and privacy for the residential area. The living space spans three floors, located at the rear and top of the building, with the main entrance being through a private elevator system, while also connecting to a shared staircase.
The structure of the building was inspired by natural cave formations. By arranging two inverted cones skewing from each other, we created a winding, narrow, and tall void that evokes the feeling of a cave enclosed by steep cliffs, where soft rays of sunlight gently filter down from above. As you follow this spatial flow toward the rear of the building, guided by the overhead light, you encounter a staircase leading to the upper floors. There, you can explore and choose your favorite seating spot – perhaps a front-facing one with panoramic views of the landscape, or an outdoor seat on the top floor, where you may feel as though you are wandering into a lush oasis covered in tropical foliage.
The building's load-bearing system combines reinforced concrete and steel structures, resulting in a design that is both solid and slender, with an Industrial aesthetic. Furthermore, the interplay of steel, concrete, and rough black walls creates a space of depth and sensuality. Large glass panels on the facade blur the boundaries between the interior and exterior, thus allowing reflections on the glass to draw the lush greenery inside, while offering a chance to explore the building’s interior spaces.
