Kafe Nordic is a cafe located in a residential area of Itaewon, Seoul, near the Comme Des Garcons street which has emerged as a new hot spot for food, fashion and culture.
Nordic Bros. Design Community and the clients discussed the creation of a space that embraced a contemporary lifestyle, humor, and artistic expression that was also based on functionality. As a result they developed what they called an “aesthetic of inconvenience,” in which the cafe was built in the semi-basement of a residence.
The exterior facade is in the shape of a yellow Scandinavian-style house that provides contrast against the larger brick building. The house is a motif of Lune du Matin’s packaging and was designed by one of Kafe Nordic’s CEOs in collaboration with Nordic Bros. Design Community. The vibrant color seeks to energize the quiet and peaceful mood of the red brick residential area.
The hallway flooring and wall tile is from the Azulej collection, a collaboration between Patricia Urquiola and Mutina. Here, 27 tile patterns were combined, covering part of the classical wood flooring and creating visual interest. The space features a mix of shape and color as well as furniture including Emeco, Flototto, Hay and Ton chairs and cafe tables, Yong-Hwan Shin’s Candlestick table and Lune du Matin candle holders, and Light Au Lait wall sconces by Ingo Maurer. Mutina’s Folded tiles are used on the floor and wall in the restroom, creating an origami-like effect that creates a relaxing and beautiful private space for guests.
