Scenes of the Past
While renovating their primary home in 2021, the family shared with us their story of a second house, located on the outskirts of Hanoi. Rather than demolishing and rebuilding, they prioritized an expansion that reused materials from the original structure — an approach that not only saved costs but also preserved layers of memory across different stages of living. A modest act, yet one that deepens appreciation for everyday values.
The multi-generational house was originally built in 2004 by the now-late father, which includes a main three-story house, a family temple, and gardens with street-facing rental kiosks. Over twenty years, as the family moved to the city, the house deteriorated and lost its intended function.
The renovation focused on the ground floor, reshaped to meet the daily needs of the aging mother while also aiming to create a space that inspires connections — a place for big family gatherings, worship, rest, and play. Old doors from another family home, which built in the inner city of Hanoi in 2010, were reused on the new facade, along with a large veranda running along the front yard that links the ancestral hall to indoor living spaces. This act helps blur the line between inside and out, and bring a thread of the family’s memory from a different era. The old timber gate, brick-paved yard, and greenery reassembled from the old yard enclose the home in a familiar, private atmosphere and recalling the essence of the family’s countryside roots.
