Building K is the most recent project linked to the transformation of the Crédit Mutuel Wacken headquarters into the Campus Vert (Green Campus). Its renovation addresses two urgent sets of needs: improving the performance of façades that had become overly energy-intensive, and enhancing natural lighting across its floor plates. Beyond this, the project stands as a manifesto for a new way of working and inhabiting the workplace, serving the 700 staff who use the building daily. It has been awarded the BREEAM “very good” certification.

The façades, extended to the south by planted balconies in continuity with new work-cafés and break spaces, give concrete form to this pursuit of clarity and transparency. Their design is punctuated by a regular rhythm of splayed columns, randomly oriented, which let natural light slide across their pearlescent white metal surface. Framed between bands supported by a timber structure, they compose a façade that is sober yet institutional, radiant with clarity.

Continuity between interior and exterior spaces is a guiding principle of the design. A patio, in particular, has been created spanning the two lower levels to bring in substantial natural light; its capsule-like shape gives physical form to the logic of fluidity running through the interior floor plates. Densely planted, this green well at the heart of the workspaces is also visible from a gallery set along the intermediate roof, itself planted as well. This gallery links two wings governed by an open, modular floor plan, a source of flexibility and adaptability. Workstations are unassigned, and the floor plates are organized like a vast coworking space.

Building K becomes as much a place to live as to work, with staff moving through spaces that are legible and easy to understand, but above all accessible and inclusive. Easily appropriated by its users, the building reinvents the office and endows it with a new quality that fosters professional growth and personal motivation through material well-being.
