After winning a limited competition in 2009, ADP was appointed to design a new academic building for one of our longest standing clients, the University of Sussex. With Sussex celebrating its 50th anniversary in the academic year 2011/12, we have been able to share the excitement surrounding the opening of the new Jubilee Building: ’It's better, I think, than we ever imagined. You can look at models, but it's only when you go on site that you get a sense of the real scale of it. It's just fantastic. This is going to be a centrepiece of campus." (Professor Michael Farthing, Vice Chancellor at the University of Sussex). The new building, which forms a major new quadrangle on the University’s Falmer Campus, has been designed to complement its surrounding iconic architecture, designed by notable British architect Sir Basil Spence.Teaching accommodation is arranged over two flexible wings either side of a large central atrium, with bridges connecting the two sides. A café and social learning space link the main block to an adjoining 500-seat lecture theatre, which is partly submerged and provides a grass covered roof terrace for students, staff and visitors to enjoy.Sustainability is central to the building, which is on target to achieve a BREEAM ‘Outstanding’ rating under BREEAM Bespoke.
