This attractive villa blends contemporary and traditional design, appealing to a new generation that seeks luxury rooted in Japanese culture.
One side of the property faces the views, whilst the other protects itself from harsh traffic from a main road to Sapporo.
The building is very large with extensive structural spans.
The challenge was to limit the amount of exposed structure whilst maintaining structural integrity, even under extremely heavy snow loads.
Architectural Concept & Inspiration:
Inspired by traditional Japanese Minka architecture, the house reinterprets classic elements through a modern lens. Its dark timber exterior and natural materials evoke the warm tones of traditional homes, while a distinctive circular window frames views of the landscape, symbolizing harmony with nature. An engawa—an outdoor veranda—wraps around the house, creating a seamless flow between indoors and outdoors, fostering tranquility. The surrounding Japanese garden, with stones, water features, and seasonal plants, extends the living space and cultivates a meditative, minimalist atmosphere rooted in Japanese philosophies of simplicity and asymmetry.
