One of MU's most storied and beloved residence halls, Johnston, was in need of comprehensive upgrades. The University hired IAA to design a phased renovation of the hall, in conjunction with that of neighboring Wolpers Hall. Work included a complete building systems upgrade, plan modifications to better suit student community functions, fully redesigned interior finishes, a new dining facility, and a new courtyard.
IAA began by designing new floor plans to suit the University’s ‘Living-Learning’ program, which called for increased common living space on every floor. These alterations now better support community activities, and include features like computer labs, lounge areas, and study halls. For the dwelling units, which accommodate 300 students, much of the traditional double-room layouts were maintained for economy, a practical approach that allowed all HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and IT infrastructure to be upgraded to meet new efficiency standards and technology requirements. The main level of the hall was completely reconfigured, both for comfort and security purposes. New lounges and the market-relevant Sabai dining, draw residents together and help to invoke a sense of 'home-away-from-home.' Lastly, the courtyard outside was redesigned to cultivate a strong sense of community and unites Johnston with adjacent Wolpers Hall. The outdoor feature beautifies the heavily-trafficked landscape, and provides hangout areas and bicycle storage for residents.
This project is designated by a LEED Gold certification.
