Tipton Associates was retained to renovate The University of Mississippi’s Johnson Commons West building which was originally constructed in 1964. $11 million renovations include modernization and expansion of the 50,000 sf, 2 story west wing which houses the main campus dining location, catering, and administrative offices.
The interior of the building has been completely renovated to create a voluminous market with multiple freshly prepared food kitchens to support a healthy living and learning environment. Natural light was brought into the center of the building with new skylights and white, translucent ceiling clouds. The new “Market Place” dining includes four individual fresh food concept restaurants and a central catering kitchen to serve the entire campus. This project was designed within campus context while enhancing circulation, building operations, and visual presence. Restoring and enhancing important campus circulation paths, connections between the building interiors and the central campus Quadrangle augment student flow.
