Perched high atop the hills of Hollywood, the Singer Residence is a contemporary home that juxtaposes modern, concrete architecture among breathtaking views of the City of Angels from every corner of the home. Designed by Mayes Office |MO|, its straightforward, linear architecture and open layout invite the surrounding mountains to be an integral element of the structure.
The addition and remodel was conceived as a tree house being situated between existing evergreen and deciduous trees. Balanced shade, dappled sunlight, and tree canopy views are the basis of the Singer Residence. The design was also influenced by the unique topography, which deepens the home’s connection to the surrounding views.
With renowned Griffith Park set as a backdrop, an expansive use of glass on its facade showcases the minimalistic interior and the lush landscape beyond. Additionally, natural light is welcomed throughout the home due to the use of huge windows. Warm finishes of recycled wood and polished concrete complete the sleek modern finish indoors.
The sustainability of the home is supported by low maintenance materials such as reclaimed woods and locally sourced natural stone retaining walls. Additional features to the two-story structure include a roof deck allowing the home’s occupants to feel living in this home is akin to life within the canopy of the sycamore it embraces. A relaxed and easy ambience contributes to a harmonious relationship between the house and its occupants.
The Singer residence is a testament of how Mayes Office successfully transformed the quaint hillside home into a truly remarkable home and a livable work of art.
