John O'Groats Mill is the last surviving Caithness grain mill with its machinery intact: a Category B listed three-storey rubble complex, founded c.1750, largely rebuilt in 1901, and operational until 2001. Derelict for over two decades, it was acquired in 2020 by the John O'Groats Mill Trust, a community-owned Scottish charity with over 350 members. The £4.9m restoration was completed in May 2025. With minimal loss to the historic fabric, the project returned a 13-foot overshot waterwheel and the original milling machinery to working order and added a single-storey extension sunk into the adjacent hillside. The building was removed from the Buildings at Risk Register on completion.
