Reimagining Joglo Architecture in a Modern Context
In the affluent Dharmawangsa residential area of Jakarta, a client envisioned a residence that embraces traditional Javanese Joglo architecture. K-Thengono Design Studio was commissioned to blend these vernacular elements with a modern urban context, resulting in the aptly named Joglo Reimagined.
The design strategy begins with constructing four dispersed volumes along the edge of the site. These forms adhere to Joglo characteristics, including pitched roofs that resemble frustum pyramids—historically symbolic of social and economic status. Constructed from local sirap ulin wood, the roofs feature skylights and windows to optimize natural light. Within three of these pitched roofs, the master and children’s bedrooms are situated, each with a mezzanine level that leads to a rooftop garden. The fourth volume functions as a circulation core and doubles as a library, with bookshelves and benches integrated along the staircase.
A raised rectangular cuboid intersects with the Joglo roofs at the heart of the residence, connecting private spaces and the circulation core. This central volume provides space for common areas, including an open-plan living room and dining area. Frosted glass wraps the entire facade, and V-shaped steel columns support the structure, creating a modern contrast to the vernacular components.
Beneath this elevated cuboid, a lounge is designed for social gatherings and guest receptions. A home theater, gym, guest bedroom, and service area are distributed across this level, aligning with the layout of the vernacular volumes above. The negative spaces between these functional areas form courtyards and a swimming pool, integrating outdoor views into the interior.
Traditional construction techniques are preserved with layered wooden beams and columns made from recycled teak, left exposed to enhance the residence's rustic character. This is balanced by finishing details such as bronze-colored aluminum framing, which introduces a modern flair.
Joglo Reimagined achieves a delicate equilibrium where vernacular and contemporary elements coexist. The project showcases a harmonious interplay between cultural heritage and modern design, with each architectural component complementing rather than overpowering the other.
