The project is a renovation project which reconfigures a late 1990s retail structure into a contemporary boutique restaurant. Located in the particular commercial center of Chongqing and surrounded by some megastructures, including museums, highrises, and department stores, the Jll-Chuan Restaurant is intended to be a different type of landmark that not competing with the adjacent large-scale buildings in pursuit of expressionism but rather displaying totally different genius loci following traditional Chinese Courtyard both in terms of material and spatial arrangement.
A “contrasting” is selected, namely, a Rationalist Design approach towards the exterior façade versus a more Dynamic Expression for the interior. We wrap the existing structure with a double-skin façade in a simple box shape: the new attached prefabricated curtain wall system as an ad-hoc basis to hold cement bricks whose color is deliberated set to mimic the tile color of the Chinese garden. Second, the opening on the facades follows a spatial logic of visual corridors to frame views toward the surrounding key buildings. The custom-made bamboo strips were applied to the windows, which helped creates a sense of multi-level spatial transparency.
The interior arrangements follow an itinerary of different spatial sequence, tying together different rooms in different sizes and settings. Curves are the theme of interior design, wave-shapes are applied to both ceiling and walls. The contrast between the exterior and interior will inspire the users to further explore the space besides enjoying the great food.
