Innovative Design Meets Commercial Vision in Nanjing
Jinling Place is a flagship retail destination nestled in Nanjing’s vibrant Hexi city centre. Developed by Alibaba Group and operated by CR Mixc Lifestyle, the development stands as a landmark of innovative design and commercial vision, occupying 130,000 sqm across nine bespoke levels. Jinling Place benefits from its strategic location along Nanjing Metro Line 2, providing direct and convenient access for visitors to the retail hub.
Through an immersive interior design approach led by Lead8 from concept to completion, the project redefines urban retail by blending technological integration, environmental sensitivity, and human-centric spatial planning.
Intelligent and Adaptive Retail Environments
Jinling Place posed a distinctive design challenge: to seamlessly integrate Alibaba’s co-creation vision with Mixc CR Lifestyle’s data-driven operational strategy, all within a timeless yet versatile environment. The goal was to create a space capable of engaging a diverse customer base, from young families and professionals to aspirational shoppers. Lead8 responded by designing a dynamic vertical retail destination that cultivates community connection and seamlessly weaves lifestyle experiences throughout its fabric.
At the heart of our design was the question of how to create a space that genuinely serves people’s evolving needs, blending function, ambiance and innovation. The design approach embraced an open and fluid spatial language layered with the metaphor of ‘The Cloud’, with shifting textures, colours and light that evolve from dawn to dusk, cultivating an immersive journey that appeals to each of the project’s diverse target audiences.
Lead8’s interior design concept, based on three iconic atriums (Dawn, Cloud, and Dusk) anchors the project, providing visitors with experiential wayfinding and memorable impact. These atriums work in harmony with thematic sub-zones to articulate a carefully curated visual and sensory design. Signature spaces including the event atriums, urban living rooms, and a sky street for open-air dining, enhance the multi-sensory journey, appeal to changing values and strengthen tenant programming.
A Timeless and Sustainable Environment
Recognising the importance of environmental comfort and sustainability, Lead8 adopted a modular framework that balances aesthetic design with operational efficiency. This approach enhances natural daylight and improves indoor air quality, while significantly reducing reliance on artificial energy consumption. The interior finishes and spatial layouts are designed for flexibility and longevity, ensuring Jinling Place can adapt to future retail trends and community needs without losing its iconic appeal.
Welcoming over 280 brands, with more than 40% making their regional debut, Jinling Place represents an evolution in urban retail experiences in China. The development cleverly leverages Alibaba Group’s cutting-edge technology and CR Mixc Lifestyle’s behavioural insights to inform the development’s spatial design, inviting exploration and social interaction and reinforcing a commitment to immersive lifestyle destinations.
Jinling Place in Nanjing marks the first collaboration between Lead8 and Alibaba Group, while also strengthening Lead8’s extensive portfolio with CR Mixc Lifestyle.
