1. In Tune with the Times: Supporting the Asian Games
Jinhua, as a branch venue for the 2022 Hangzhou Asian Games, hosted the sepak takraw competition and soccer group stage matches. As a crucial facility for the Games, the Jinhua Asian Games Sub-Village serves as a significant showcase for Jinhua's culture.
Located within the Duohu Chishan District block, at the core of the Duohu Central Business District, the project has a total construction area of 86,000 square meters. It is primarily composed of three functional zones: the Media Zone, Officials Zone, and Athletes Zone. During the Games, it provided 710 beds and reserved areas for athletes, technical officials, and media personnel. The Jinhua Asian Games Sub-Village represents another example of gad's comprehensive event-supporting projects, following the National Games Villages in Jinan, Shenyang, Tianjin, and Xi'an.
2. Contemporary Expression and Artisanal Creation
Situated within Chishan Park, with the Wujiang River flowing by and distant mountains encircling the site, the project exists at a confluence of nature and culture, the ancient and the future. The starting point for our design thinking was how to articulate the essence of Eastern culture here and capture the spirit of a modern city through contemporary design techniques.
Drawing inspiration from the essence of classical Jiangnan garden design and distilling the character of Eastern architecture, the masterplan arranges the three zones—Media, Officials, and Athletes' Apartments—around water, creating a traditional garden-like spatial layout. Each of the three building groups is organized around its own courtyard. These courtyards, varying in size and form, impart distinct characters to their respective building groups: the Media Zone is formal and ordered, the Athletes Zone is regular and structured, and the Officials Zone is free and expressive.
The architectural form is understated and restrained, with warm, muted colors and a rustic materiality. It integrates into the hilly landscape of Chishan Park with a low-profile posture, becoming part of the broader natural scenery. In terms of construction, conventional materials and low-tech craftsmanship were employed. Extensive exploration was done regarding the materials, textures, and colors of roofs, walls, and ceilings to achieve the best possible outcome within limited budget and timeframe constraints.
3. Post-Games Utilization and Urban Integration
The Jinhua Asian Games Sub-Village was designed with flexibility and adaptability in mind, creating ample potential for functional conversion after the Games. Constructed to a complete standard beforehand, it can be easily transformed internally post-Games to fully open to the public as urban infrastructure. Integrated with Chishan Park, it will become an urban public complex for leisure, sports, conferences, and hospitality.
