Covering an area of 560 by 470 meters, the Jingzhou Sports Center is in a prime location in Jingzhou New Area, central Jingzhou City, Hubei Province. The sports center will be used for major sporting events, but is also designed to be a part of the lives of local residents and visitors. In addition, it is also a public place where people can participate in indoor and outdoor activities, attend concerts, set up markets, and hold celebrations. It must be multifunctional for a large sports facility to run smoothly and independently.
A traditional architectural design with the single purpose of hosting sporting events seemed inappropriate. Most sports architecture gives people a kind of huge, overbearing, and rough feeling. As such, we are looking to integrate popular cultural architecture into sports architecture so that sports architecture becomes more open and welcoming.
Within the Jingzhou Sports Center are interconnected architectural relationships. The designs of the gym, swimming pool, and athletics stadium accommodate each other, which increases the functional interaction between these areas. In doing so, more energy is saved and facility management becomes easier. The large amount of greenery on the raised platform that connects the three functional areas with the park adds to the multifunctionality of the building and makes it a haven during the fierce summer in Jinzhou.
The Jingzhou Sports Center is situated on marshland, and a large amount of earthwork will need to be done if a landfill method is used. Thus, we try to work with the existing topography by creating a three-dimensional sinking sports theme park with central architecture as the core to let it have more free and comfortable activity space. Shade, trails of different heights, and a large body of water make the whole area delightful in all seasons and a prime place of gathering for all visitors. In the meantime, the urban space is enriched and beautified.
