Tusick & Associates Architects, Inc. was hired for two projects at Jewart’s Gymnastics / Climb North. The first project was to renovate the three through twelve year olds’ entrance to the gymnasium. The exiting space was not functioning as required and was drab from usage and age. The space recently had cubbies built for the students’ backpacks, but no space existed for the parents to sit and wait, no area to display the sparkle leotards that are sold, the existing office was hidden from view, and the climbing wall sales area need an identity. All this was incorporated into less than 800 square feet.
Our goal was to be creative and cost effective. The project had to be completed in three months for the fall season of activities and competitions. The walls were turned into displays. Slats were installed for the sparkling leotards display. Mirrors were added to visually increase the space and reflect light as well as the trophies and sparkling leotards. The carpeting was selected because it was fun and glows in the dark for sleepovers. The budget was tight; so, light fixtures were common fluorescents configured in a star burst pattern since the gymnastic team is the “North Stars”.
The design was so successful that people came to see it. The business sales are up 28% from visitors coming to see the new entrance.
After the success of the first project, Jewart’s / Climb North requested a design for expanding the gymnasium area to accommodate increased clientele. The addition to the gym was substantial: over 200,000 square feet. This addition allows Jewart’s / Climb North the size, ability, and flexibility to be one of the most successful Gymnastic and Climbing gym in Allegheny County.
