Jellingstenene - Jelling, Denmark (competition entry 2010)
The main purpose behind the project was to create a climate screen to proctect the famous rune stones and to find a respectful contrast to the historical surroundings.
With its simple curving form and reflecting material it appears more as a sculpture on the church yard than an ordinary building, which would be a competing element so close to the church entrance. The double curving wing made of polished steel, anchored on the opposite part of the entrance to the church, stands humbly in the background and opens up to the public arriving along the road from the visiting centre.
The sculptural form is underlined with the high glossy, reflecting finish, which gives the shelter a timelessness that reflects the historic surroundings – at times the shelter appears almost as a mirage in the landscape.
