The Jean M. Smith Branch Library is the oldest of nine prototypical designs that first opened to the public in 1995 with other branches throughout the County opening over the next ten years. Greer is perhaps the fastest growing town in the area, and is geographically located in both Greenville and Spartanburg Counties.

CGD was commissioned for the complete renovation (11,500sf) of the existing library spaces and a new addition (5,000sf) that allows the library to expand programming and patron services, increase staff efficiencies, and upgraded state-of-the-art technologies. Flexible spaces were designed for public programming while the children’s area and teen room were customized for their respective age groups and activities.

Overall, the library’s new look is balanced by cues the design team took from historic Downtown Greer. Millwork in the teen area harkens back to bustling railroads while floor patterns in the children’s room are resonant of once thriving textile mills. After the library’s one year closure for renovation, the combination of new textures, colors, and contemporary furniture will give the patrons and staff of Jean M. Smith Branch Library a welcome refresh for this much needed community resource.
