Jean Jaurès Subway Station was opened in 1993 before the creation of the second subway line (B) of Toulouse. The flow generated by the daily migrations of users are cyclical and periodically massive. Since the opening of the B line including the new configuration of the common sharing room with two lines, the Jean Jaurès station saw its attendance increase dramatically. The exchange room and platforms of the line A were saturated. At peak times, chronic congestion of the platforms, and delays induced by the crossing flows in the interconnecting room, asked the implementation of improvement solutions.
The operation and image of the subway station was no longer at the height of its strategic position. The proposed project had to free the volume of the platforms line A, to reorganize clearances and access, to create a peaceful atmosphere, to consider the symbolic importance of this project and provide users with a more airy, serene, and functional volume.
LCR Architectes worked the project following two main architectural objectives:
- Give the station a new image which devotes its specific role on the subway network and demonstrate to the users its improvements in use. This concept involved more softness, few ruptures, contrasts poorly marked, and a reduced color gamut. Another central concept was to control the light and avoid reflections as well as create a serene background on which some symbolically significant elements appear.
- We aimed to strengthen the identity of the place assuming its name heritage. The end of the renovation of the station coincides almost exactly with the hundredth anniversary of the death of Jean-Jaures. Beyond divisions, this historical character is an emblematic figure of conviction and political courage. A place bearing his name has to make a symbolic and discreet tribute to what he represents in French History.
The end result achieved the following: the central platform was cleared, the ticket hall was lengthened, the volume was lightened, the flows were separated, the routes are now lighter and more comfortable, and the station gains visibility and readability.
