Once home to Portland’s industrial past, this historic manufacturing site now houses the Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) Technology Center, with an inspired transformation into a cutting-edge workplace. With three guiding principles, the project adapts JLR’s standards to an existing structure, fuses the precision of an automotive workshop with the energy of a collaborative office, and achieves LEED Gold certification.
First, the design team folded JLR’s global workplace guidelines into a Northwest context, rooted in the ethos that “a JLR workplace should encourage creativity, collaboration, and be an invigorating and inspiring place.” Blending historic character with modern luxury, the space provides sit-stand pods, indoor cabanas, lounges, and library nooks. This free-address model delivers JLR’s people with choice in where and how they work, fostering creativity and innovation while honoring the building’s industrial legacy.
Second, the project merged automotive excellence with human-centered workplace design. A double-height workshop anchors the facility, featuring open and enclosed vehicle bays, two-post lifts, and a VR suite. Circulation is shaped by rigorous security protocols, yet hospitality-driven entries and gathering areas soften the experience, creating a functional, secure, and welcoming environment. The design enables technical work and collaborative activities to coexist seamlessly within a single, integrated facility.
Third, sustainability and wellness drove the design. With LEED Gold Commercial Building Certification, the project demonstrates adaptive reuse that advances both human and environmental well-being. Biophilic design strategies connect interiors to nature through exposed wood, natural finishes, lush plantings, and by extending exterior paneling into the main lobby. WELL principles guided daylighting, ventilation, and movement throughout the spaces, while amenities like a multifaith and mother’s room support holistic wellness.
