PROGRAM:
At a former state park, recently renamed as one of Pennsylvania's four Environmental Education Centers, this 9,300 GFS facility was the first building constructed, replacing offices located in a1970's bi-level former residence. In addition to the usual administrative offices, of primary importance to the PADNC program was a multi-purpose Outreach Education Room. Rest Room facilities were located so as to be open 24 hours a day. PADCNR specified the minimum of a Silver LEED rating.
SITE:
The JEEC's Master Plan had previously selected this site, along the base of a North/South escarpment, with views to the East to an existing trail, pasture, and, across Belfast Road, the historic Henry's Forge buildings at the edge of Bushkill Creek.
SOLUTION:
The "solar window" of the given site was less than optimal, due to the escarpment's height along the west elevation. A 2-story sky-topped topped interior street running North/South was selected as the main interior space. Public reception, the Outreach Education Room & building support services are located in the lower level, buried into the base of the escarpment. The upper level, containing administrative offices has views west into the base of the escarpment and east into the interior street and pasture/parking lot beyond.
The interior street features exposed Glu-Lam column & beam structure flooded with natural light from the 4 roof top mounted skylights & the east facing :dormer" windows. The east facade is pitched back at an 11.25' angle to form a PA slate-clad SIP "Mansard" roof/wall.
The facility is anchored to it's site with a regional building stone, matching the 3 Henry's Forge buildings. The cast-in-place concrete piers are clad in the same stone.
Window sills, both exterior & interior, also are PA black slate.
A small demonstration solar display assists the ground sourced geo-thermal HVAC system.
