Jabuticabeiras House
Located in the eastern region of Goiânia, Brazil, the Jabuticabeiras House is a 361-square-meter residence born from a couple’s desire to downsize and optimize their lifestyle. After their children moved out, their former home felt oversized.
Strategically choosing a 650-square-meter lot in the very neighborhood where their children and grandchildren reside, the clients aimed to foster closer family ties during their golden years.
The resulting architectural brief prioritizes functional, compact living without sacrificing generous social spaces. The private quarters feature just two suites: a master bedroom for the couple and a flexible, modular suite tailored for the grandchildren’s overnight stays.
Nature and family life form the core design pillars.
An existing orchard of jabuticaba trees—which gives the house its name—anchors the social courtyard, offering year-round shade, fruit, and well-being. Natural light floods the entire house.
At dawn, the rising sun projects the intricate geometry of the muxarabis (wooden latticework) onto the lawn, creating a poetic, ever-shifting choreography of light and shadow.The heart of the home is the expansive gourmet veranda, which flows seamlessly into the living and home theater rooms. This entire social wing wraps around the central leisure area, offering panoramic views of the garden and pool.
Connectivity is woven into the layout through multiple access points. Beyond the dual side entrances on the main facade, a strategic rear gate links the property directly to a public sidewalk and bike path. This allows the grandchildren to ride their bicycles straight over for afternoon cake at "grandma's house."On the main facade, an imposing, horizontal rectangular frame of exposed concrete defines the architecture.
This volume is filled with wood-finished aluminum muxarabi panels, balancing privacy with air circulation. Cross-ventilation serves as a cornerstone for passive thermal comfort; large sliding glass doors open fully to flush the interiors with fresh air and naturally lower indoor temperatures.While the strong horizontality creates the illusion of a single-story home from the street, a partially visible basement takes advantage of the terrain.
This lower level accommodates a spacious garage and two large storage rooms—one dedicated to the owner’s fishing gear and another for home logistics. An elevator and stairs connect this level to the ground floor, ensuring full accessibility.
Ergonomic functionality defines every interior detail. In the laundry room, the front-loading washing machine sits on a custom raised platform. This elevates the appliance to hand level, eliminating the need to bend down and protecting the homeowners' lower backs during daily chores. It is this thoughtful attention to detail that defines the spirit of the entire project.
