The JA Residence design was inspired by the client's love of 1960's pied-a-terres with references to: Art Deco design and décor; Mid-Century Modern design and art; and Hollywood Regency. Small scale, marble floor tiles were used to redefine the extent of the entry while making it feel larger. A contemporary modular shelf system (a nod to 60’s perforated room dividers) was positioned to further distinguish the entry, partially separating it from the adjacent dining/living area (previously all one space). The open shelves prominently display the client’s collection of 1950’s/60’s Georges Briard glassware. The shelves also help to define the dining area, providing a backdrop while remaining fully open to the living area. A new expanding dining table accommodates multiple uses, compacted and placed against the wall for daily home office use, shifted out and expanded for dinner parties. The living room received new wide-plank walnut flooring as did the hall and bedroom. A variety of contemporary furnishings and pendant fixtures were chosen to punctuate various rooms: entry, dining, hall, and bathroom. A custom rug was designed for the dining/living area, inspired by Moroccan Boucherouite rugs of the 1960’s/70’s. All together, the new furniture, fixtures, and finishes were arranged to establish a more experiential sequence of space while conveying a new eclectic look/feel.
