A change in scale can be experienced by transitioning from the outside (lowest) to the sacred interior space (highest), as the ceiling height of the lobby gradually increases from nearly 8 feet to 31 feet. In addition, the delicacy of the continuous ceiling material contributes to a comfortable prayer space. As the curved ceiling reaches the highest peak, natural light shines into the area of worship while the curvature is hidden into the sky.
Jeju Island is a volcanic island consisting mainly of basalt and lava. The lifestyle and perspective of the people have been shaped accordingly and therefore basalt has been used as the foundation and the flooring material of the sanctuary. The white color of the exterior façade accentuates its curved form in contrast to the surrounding nature. The simple curvature has been emphasized with its stark white hue.
The curved façade reveals metaphorically the nature of Jeju Island, as the smooth curves on the mountains were created from volcanic activities. The man-made, curved form resembles the small mountains —Oreum— and can be found throughout the island.
