Chelsea Atelier Architects was invited to an International Design Competition for a new Airport Terminal Development Project in Izmir, Turkey. The project consisted of 1.22 million square feet, 9 gate international terminal facility serving a mixture of wide body and narrow body aircraft and its related facilities. Mr. Ozan won the 5th prize award for his design in this competition. The design solution enhances the passenger’s experience and creates a positive, longstanding and significant image.
Architecturally, it evokes the spirit of Izmir through the use of a cable supported roof structure with slender columns penetrating high above the roof lines, reminiscent of sails in a seascape. The proposed terminal facility has a three-level structure in a geometric configuration “Pier” type.
