At Izieu, the children lived among a magnificent scenery. No doubt, they were happy in this landscape. This day, 70 years after they have been slaughtered, this natural setting stays an emotional and a dramatic witness of their past. Its harmony evokes the purity and vitality of children. As the emptiness of the House reminds of their absence, the fragile perfection of this splendid nature contrasts the violence of the unforgettable tragedy.
The new construction respects the site, composing with the existing elements: the farm, the barn, the topography. At the same time, it stands out being a new addition. Its presence is positive, because when one needs to leave marks, construction becomes a vital act.
Inside the building, the visitors being under effect of the historic tragedy face the panoramic views of the beautiful landscape, still carrying the traces of the children.
The new extension consists of two different constructions. The first one has a surface of 250m² and holds permanent exposition. It sits between the barn and farm walls. The second construction, put slightly apart from the first, holds 600m² of study rooms, documentation room, offices and services rooms. This partly underground construction is inserted in the local topography.
The interior of the barn is renovated to host a new exposition. The entry hall is remodelled and a bookstore is added.
