On April 6th, Bio Architecture Formosana (BAF) of Taiwan and Noiz Architects of Tokyo were declared the winner of a design competition for a research lab complex building in Nantou, Taiwan. The 4-story complex will consist of laboratories, a library, greenhouse, cafe and other public space and will he the flagship building of a new research science park that will be funded by Taiwanese government and pushed by the client public agency, ITRI, in the years to come. Additionally, this research complex building is planned to be rated as a diamond grade building, the highest grade of green building regulation in Taiwan, of which there are only 15 other buildings in existence. It will also have the highest in intelligent technology as a symbol of the high-tech IT industry of Taiwan. As the existing site houses a memorial to a 1999 earthquake and consists of about 2500 concrete blocks (as many as the number of people killed during the event), rather than replace this park, the research lab will offer its roof as a new surface for the memorial which will be accessible to the public. BAF will be designing the overall building and be the architect on record, whereas Noiz will be designing the overall facade, roofscape, and the surrounding landscape of the site.
