My own question is how
to create a contemporary tropical living with maximize to us natural light and
sensitivity to the use of material and how to re-read the Balinese concept of
living and re-interpreted into modern life?
The main idea is how to
transform the Balinese concept of home so I started by divide the land into 9
(nine) areas, Balinese called ‘Sanga Mandala’ concept.
In general, Bali house
consists of pavilions surrounding courtyard (Madya Ning Madya) then put the
kitchen area on the front side of the site. These organizations are implemented
into the design of this Villa. Kitchen put on the front side, it's like there
is a fire element, which is Brahma god, to ward off the evil spirits, which
will go into the house.
Balinese ceremonial
events are always through the stages of the change, which is transformed into
the overall master plan ,such as Balinese processions on the way to appreciate
the space, even in the whole entire ceremonial events are always through the
stages of the change and they are very unique. I want to bring people into the
building having a procession and finally arrive at a very dynamic space on the
upper floor.
The swimming pool is in
the central as a datum to reorganize all the building inside the compound,
which is play, a significant role of the re-interpretation of a contemporary
courtyard. The bridge on the second floor became a new courtyard for the upper
floor.
Local materials used as
much as possible for this building, such as pores stone (volcanic stone),
Andasit stone and white Sandstone are all easily obtained locally & Recycled
iron wood for all the outside deck and terrace. The interior is also using
recycled teakwood for the floor finish and the door.
The envelope for the second floor
pavilion is a secondary skin which works to provide privacy but at the same
time also give a new identities, his image as white as an organic tree made of
GRC and perforated metal sheet. I want to create a dynamic space so that the
west side of this envelope will produce shadows, which vary each time based on
the natural light. Shadows that are present to sign a
marker for transitional spaces, which are always changing depending journey of
the sun, finally created a lot of ambiguous spaces.
