Bridging a cultural divide between East and West, the Islamic Cultural Center combines elements of both Moorish Islamic styles and contemporary Bostonian architecture to create a unique identity for a facility designed to meet the needs of a growing urban Islamic population. Located on a busy thoroughfare, the ‘Gate of Peace’, a series of arches that extend a welcoming gesture to the community, serves as a transition between a prominent street level public plaza and the centralized prayer, social, and educational spaces within. Designed with the assistance of neighborhood representatives, the Boston Redevelopment Authority, and the Amar Center for Architecture, the Islamic Cultural Center provides a much-needed cultural outlet for Boston’s Muslims.
