“BLOK M BERJEJAK” is a revitalization concept that aims to breathe new life into the underground corridor of blok m terminal, transforming it into a public space rooted in betawi cultural identity while adapting to present and future urban needs. Currently, the terminal's underground space is in a state of decline in both function and appeal. Once a vibrant circulation and economic zone, it has lost its vitality due to shifting mobility patterns and a lack of sustainable elements. Amid the wave of globalization that erodes local identity, this design seeks to restore blok m's character as a dynamic and inclusive social space.
1. Heritage corridor: a transit space, a future rooted in the past
The heritage corridor acts as a transitional space bridging the journey from history to the future. Inspired by the gigi balang motif—an iconic betawi element symbolizing resilience and continuity—it harmonizes traditional culture with modern innovation.
Thr corridor embodies an elegant yet futuristic ambiance. Reflective materials and dynamic lighting systems create an ever-changing atmosphere based on time and activity, transforming it into a bold, interactive living space.
More than a mere passageway, this corridor offers an immersive spatial experience that reinforces urban identity and cultural pride. Multifunctional plazas, pop-up cafés, artistic expression zones, and comfortable pedestrian walkways are designed to stimulate social interaction. Digital signage and modern wayfinding enhance navigability, while greenery and skylights restore natural balance.
Not only does this corridor enhance urban mobility, it builds emotional and historical connections with its users. By elevating betawi heritage, it becomes a symbol of a city in motion—growing, evolving, yet never forgetting its roots.
2. Nyeni corridor: an urban interactive space, creativity in motion
The nyeni corridor is designed as an interactive space that celebrates creativity and the expression of urban identity. Drawing inspiration from the bunga cempaka motif—a betawi geometric symbol—this design reflects the community’s adaptive spirit and creative energy in everyday social interactions.
The colour palette sets a warm and dynamic tone, encouraging freedom of expression and imagination, while nurturing emotional bonds between users and the space. Interactive technology—digital signage, pocket parklets, optional artificial façades—enhances the user experience and invites deeper engagement.
It serves as a canvas for street art, a venue for community events, and a space for creative exchange. Existing skylights and integrated greenery maintain a balance between innovation and sustainability—offering an inclusive, vibrant identity of the contemporary city.
3. Berbudaye corridor: a circular space of interaction, from past to future
The berbudaye corridor is grounded in a circularity approach—reconnecting space with betawi cultural wisdom through diverse programming such as traditional markets, pop-up art galleries, and public interaction zones. Inspired by langkan—a betawi architectural element signifying protection and thresholds—the design encourages openness and reconnection among people, affirms identity and celebrates expressive diversity, fostering spatial interactions that evoke pride and belonging in cultural heritage.
More than a cultural showcase, this corridor becomes an economic catalyst. Pop-up markets and art galleries give local creatives a platform to express ideas and grow culture-based economies. Integrated iot and ai technology ensure adaptive spatial functions aligned with modern shifts, while the addition of greenery ensures progress remains rooted in sustainability.
This corridor is not only a physical connector but also a social and cultural transformer. Every design element ensures that betawi heritage remains alive and relevant, while fostering inclusive creative growth—a tangible harmony between the past and the future.
The BLOK M BERJEJAK concept is not merely a physical revitalization—it is an act of reconstructing meaning and public identity rooted in local culture. By interweaving heritage, art, and the creative economy within a single spatial narrative, the project aspires to be a model of community-empowered, sustainability-oriented revitalization.
With this holistic approach, blok m berjejak emerges not just as a node or a space, but as a cultural corridor that reflects the unique character of jakarta: dynamic, inclusive, and grounded in its rich historical legacy.
