The Irving Place kitchen got a complete gut renovation, designed and managed by m | monroe design. The small space was maximized (and the resale value raised) by removing a section of wall opening the kitchen up the the living/ dining area. The improved flow of the space allows the client to have more natural light and a 'great room' feel perfect for entertaining. The kitchen was modernized with space-efficient stainless steel appliances, Silestone countertop, and a motion sensor faucet. However, to maintain the integrity of the classic Manhattan building, a timeless style was maintained throughout. To complete the renovation, we installed double doors on the large entry closet. The closet interior was quite large, but previously only had one small access door.
From the initial meeting, we knew that the space needed a lot of change. It was dark, small, and closed off from the rest of the apartment. Plans and renderings helped the client visualize opening up the wall and re-arranging the living/ dining area. The lighting design focused on the need for different light levels at different times. It included ceiling cans, decorative pendant lights, and under cabinet lighting; all on dimmers. During construction the decision was made to enlarge the hallway closet doors to allow more access into the wide closet. This upgrade called for a new paint color in the entry hall, and really rounded out the overall design and dramatic change in the apartment.
