Design for a public architectural contest in Brasilia, Brazil for IPHAM Institute Headquarters. (Memorial and historical Institute).
I - CONCEPT
In Tupi-Guarani word "anga" means shelter or shade.
We create a cultural "anga" sheltering all of interactive spaces, those who harbor the cultural heritage of IPHAN in two spaces interconnected levels under an inclined plane that refers to the most basic Indian shelter, consisting of palm leaves and recorded by Jean Baptiste Debret in his illustrations.
(J. B. Debret ilustration)
This inclined plane, thermally insulated by a grass and ground cover, protects the afternoon sun and sunsets, the most inclement guidance on the central plateau whwrw Brasilia is, turning his back to him.
A transverse axis for pedestrian and vehicles traffic and bridges on it, connect the "anga" with the building where we concentrate all administrative activities, facilitating the access of people and services to different buiding sectors.
The administrative building is organized into three sectors with separate vertical accesses, corresponding to: Directors, President / Co-ordination and Administration. Continuous slabs allow different arrangements of layout and redistribution of areas in the future with full flexibility.
The linear format, interspersed with courtyards lighting and ventilation ensures all environments light and natural ventilation, reducing the need for air conditioning facilities only for closed rooms.
The administrative building has four levels:
- Partially underground, confined, with exclusive use for garage and technical areas.
- General semi-underground, unconfined, with mixed-use garage and offices connected to the internal street.
- Ground floor, almost at ground level, connected to the pedestrian walkway.
- Superior, with access by stairs and elevators.
II - DEPLOYMENT
The geometric continuation of the monumental Brasilia axis passes a few meters from the NW corner plot and the geometric continuation of the axis of South monumental Avenue runs right on the ground.
These urban elements of undeniable presence define the implementation of the building with its structural movement axis, perpendicular to them and back to west orientation.
The main access pedestrian, starting from the inner track defines an axis orthogonal to the structure and parallel to the monumental axis and passes through the plot under buildings, by two ramps and terminates in a semi-buried square that allows access and the output pedestrian toward the street.
The passage of the axis of the monumental avenue is marked with cylindrical poles lighting. The same type of poles marks the structural axis of movement and supports the pedestrian walkway. The axis parallel to the Monumental Axis also marked by lampposts, and the others converge toward the lake Paranoá, visible on the horizon from the upper floors.
The building environments open mainly to the east and the lake.
The basic level was set at the level in 1036 (1035.50 +/- 1m) and the highest point of the inclined plane is 12 m above it.
The semi-underground, not confined, allowing the realization of loitering activities with guaranteed ventilation and natural lighting, reducing the volume built above ground level.
