Nestled along a quiet circular drive in Rollingwood, the Inwood Residence is located on a gently sloping one-acre lot that offers views of the rolling hills of West Austin. The concept of home for this young family of four was centered on their verdant landscape and the street they loved, rather than the undersized and aging structure they had lived in for a decade prior.
Working hand in hand with the architects, the new home was conceived as a thoughtful response to the sloping land the clients cherished, as well as a celebration of their unique family dynamics. Deliberately innocuous and low-lying from the street, the hunkered brick walls provide privacy and sanctuary for the children’s bedrooms and conceal the garage from public view.
Once inside, a pair of soaring voluminous light monitors celebrate the respective family and guest entrances. Flanking these centrally located carved spaces, a wood and glass sleeping wing floats free from the receding landscape and is carefully nestled within the tree canopy that lines the creek edge below. A secondary glass wing reaches out towards the distant view, offering stunning 180-degree views from the kitchen, living and dining room. A family den, screened porch, and covered family patio are carefully tucked below, doubling the livable space of the modest one-story home above.
The house was built using durable and beautiful materials. The exterior envelope is clad in locally sourced, FSC-certified wood siding and complemented with Roman brick masonry and weathering steel. All the materials require minimal maintenance and have long life cycles. The selected materials support a sense of well-crafted quality and a connection to the surrounding natural and urban context to ensure the home will stand the test of time in material integrity and as a cherished object that will endure for a longer lifespan than many of its contemporary neighbors.
