To establish a new creative hub dedicated to puppet arts, Casteliers and the Association québécoise des marionnettistes (AQM) have partnered to create the International House of Puppet Arts (MIAM). Conceived as both a performance venue and a centre for craftsmanship, this Montréal institution brings together a theatre, a fabrication workshop, and office spaces for its two resident organizations.
Located within an existing building on the Saint-Viateur block in Outremont, MIAM occupies a structure whose historical analysis indicates it originally served as a stable. The project involves a full restoration of the building and a comprehensive reorganization of its interior spaces to support its specialized program.
The envelope restoration reopens the former stable bays, preserving the memory of the building’s past. Exterior terraces aligned with the interior floor levels enhance universal accessibility and allow certain activities to extend outdoors.
An exterior staircase was added to ensure compliant access to upper-level exits. This new architectural element also improves the visibility of the building, which sits recessed from the street; the staircase is wrapped in a decorative metal screen that announces the building’s cultural purpose.
