Rocks of YerevanThe Ararat Mountains and Little Ararat define the sacred dimension of the territory.
Two natural elements of different dimension that dominate the landscape become the principal conceptual reference of the project.
The project proposes two volumes of different dimension with a pure geometry, the cube. The two cubes are rotated towards the mountain in order to establish a direct relation between a human made construction and the ?God?s creation?, the Ararat.
The two cubes are made by the aggregation of simple volumes playing dynamically inside a main pure volume. Vertical and horizontal cuts shape the volume creating a sequence of mass and void, light and shadow.
The building located in the southern part of the site, which houses the intercontinental hotel is set perpendicular to the Teryan Street defining its background. The west site of the building, which houses the serviced apartments, faces Abovyan square and together with the southern side of the small cube define the background stage of the square.
The two buildings stand as monolithic totems, they establish a direct visual dialog with the natural elements of the territory and at the same time they relate themselves with the surrounding limitrophe areas. They appear as a dominant architectural solution from all point of the city as well as from higher amphitheatres that punctuate the perimeter.
The buildings are made by the aggregation of pure volumes excavated and cut down by vertical cuts that frame the internal squares, creating a sequence of mass and void, light and shadow.
The two building are mix-use-buildings, the big one located in the southern part of the site houses the Intercontinental Hotel, the serviced apartments, offices and a series of services as auditorium, conference room, restaurant, exhibition space, creative centre, housed on the three floor basement; the small one houses apartments, offices and retail area. The two buildings are connected each other by a system of public and green spaces, the business square in the north and the panoramic terraced garden in the west.
Considering the peculiarity of the site and the privileged view on the biblical mt. Ararat the distribution of the program on the site has been done privileging the view of the Hotel, the serviced apartments and the houses. As a result, all the rooms, suites, and all the apartments have a view on the city centre and on the Ararat Mountain.
The buildings present themselves as 2 monolithic volumes made in concrete perforated by a system of vertical and horizontal opening. The density solid-void varies according to the luminosity comfort, the quality of the space, the panoramic view and the orientation of the building.
