Hills and valleys of luscious green speckled with beautiful homes under the bright, blue Californian sky……this was the scenery that beckoned to us as we first walked around the
two-story house in Portola Valley, CA.
The large and beautiful lot had some constraints but just the serenity and beauty of this place pushed us to do our best as designers. It had to be a place where the owners and their guests could not only soak themselves in the fantastic views whilst enjoying the place itself!
It started by cutting into the the hillside to enlarge the backyard and creating space to also enlarge the master bathroom that overlooked the backyard. New retaining walls were built while the old ones were retrofitted. The existing Elm tree in the backyard we kept as a mark of keeping alive as much of the existing natural flora as possible. The outdoor dining area was close to the tree.
The overall landscape design of the backyard was conceptualized in levels and steps, giving the faint human touch of the nearby nature’s slopes. The lowest level, incorporates pavers, lawn, shrubs and seating in the form of benches. The in-built wall water fountain is the focal point of the backyard. It is faced with a very attractive tile which is also used on the shower panel constructed on the exterior of the master bathroom wall. A door next to the shower panel wall leads from the backyard into the master bathroom.
The wall water fountain is flanked on both sides by benches for seating and planters which look as if they were cut into the slopes. A fight of stairs next to one of the planters leads to an elevated spa overlooking the gorgeous natural and man-made landscape! What a feeling!!!... to be seemingly floating in mid-air and feeling like reaching out the skies above and the trees below!
The master bathroom was enlarged and reconfigured with custom cabinetry, rain shower heads, Zuma free-standing tub and finer details like a tiled niche in the shower to hold essentials.
