Interaction Associates (IA) and it's non-profit sister organization, Interaction Institution for Social Change (IISC) hired Margulies Perruzzi Architects for a complete interior fit-out project at Seaport Center.
The companies were coming from a much larger space in Cambridge, and had specific requirements for how the new space would function. After meeting with both companies, MPA came up with the design goal. The space would be efficient, much more collaborative, and would include many flexible spaces for multi-purpose use.
The building itself presented several challenges, which ended up contributing to the overall design. The windows were set very high, so in order to take advantage of the views it was necessary to raise the floors substantially. Rather than raising the entire floor, MPA raised the perimeter of the office with workstations, and came up with the idea of a 'sunken living room' in the center of the office to act as a "collaboration area". This area allows employees to have impromptu meetings, and sketch ideas either on laptops, or directly onto the tables which have paper built in.
For more formal public meetings that IA often has with clients, there are traditional conference rooms at the back of the office. However, in order to not disrupt the "collaboration area" as clients walk in and out of the office, there is a divider that creates a clear path for the clients to walk to the conference rooms at the other end.
