The Infectious Disease Laboratories is part of a master plan for the new facilities at the Instituto de Diagnóstico y Referencia Epidemiológicos (InDRE). The 183,000-square-foot, 6-story building houses México’s Center for Disease Control laboratories and belongs to a worldwide network of labs including the U.S. Center for Disease Control. It has 6 BSL-3 laboratories, BSL-2 laboratories and an animal vivarium facility. The building was designed with the tightest biosafety standards specified by the National Institute of Health, the World Health Organization and the Center for Disease Control. The design implemented sustainability strategies to promote ecological consciousness and reduce energy consumption. The site includes an additional building for administration and education areas.
