Award "Baukulturpreis des Landes Brandenburg"Since 1990 a new natural science campus is developed on an old barrack’s
compound in the suburb of Golm in several phases of construction. The
institute, with its calm, rectangular figure, marks the Campus’ ending towards
the Karl-Liebknecht-Straße and the central green space, in which in the future
the library will define the entrance to the campus.
The building embraces its architectural and functional meaning towards
the important internal lateral axis of the campus.
The calm rectangular base figure for the 3 storey high institute
continues the urban plan the campus.
The long, calm facade adds to the existing structures of the
Karl-Liebknecht-Straße. The one storey backdrop on the east side not only
creates a covered connection but a generous opening to the foyer and atrium
with its placed cubes that function as lecture halls. Two entries in the corner
areas with open staircases to the upper levels tie the building and its
interior circulation self-evident in the Campus. Three-storey, light-flooded
halls allow an easy orientation and provide interesting communication options.
The all around metal covering with its movable sun protection shutters
creates an eventful play in the facade and is the distinctive token of the
physics institute.
The program is classified in offices and lab areas, which are mostly
linear arranged. Fully equipped laboratories are located in the center of three
zones. By the choice of material (exposed concrete) and the refined shape of
the hall areas, the interior space becomes its own architectural theme.
The facades are distinguished
by extreme formal and material reduction, which gives the building a strong
presence in the heterogenic architectural surrounding. Perforated aluminum
panels, some of which are movable for sun protection, cover the entire façade.
The atrium adds to the hermetic of the exterior face by using light transparent
white printed glass.
