In the middle of Utrecht city centre, on St. Jacobstraat, you will find a typical rented office: anonymous, efficient, apparently dull, the kind of place that suggests that work cannot and should not be enjoyable. The contrast with the interior on the second floor, the Inspectorate‘s premises, is remarkable. Here you are welcomed into a space that is stylish, warm, bright and homely – precisely the kind of setting that helps you to relax and focus as you work. That ambience is achieved due to the wooden plexwood finish in the entrance area, around which the common areas such as the reception, kitchen, bar and lounge are set. As you exit the lift, the space makes an immediate impression. In a stroke of ingenuity, a glass wall has been incorporated that facilitates a good connection between both wings of the office, without giving the visitor the feeling that they are standing at a formal entrance. Inside, two oval meeting rooms light up the space like lanterns, very gently and indirectly, creating an atmosphere of tranquillity in the space. The offices are set round this area. The office is based on a hybrid clean desk concept: a combination of a cellular office and an office landscape with clustered archives for each department. The offices are all separated from each other by sealed, removable walls, yet have been kept open in relation to the middle zone. The acoustic ceiling combined with the carpet ensure that there is sufficient sound absorption.
