INHABITING THE TRADITIONAL: EXTENSION OF EXISTING TOWNHOUSE
Set in an Urban Conservation Area within one of Malta’s most prestigious traditional streets, this townhouse, flanked by similar houses on either side, is typical of traditional spatial planning typical of the period:
Large rooms, high ceilings, strong axial layout and a well-thought of passive ventilation systems the reduction of rising damp & humidity.
The re-use of this house as a contemporary home necessitated sanitation and layout alterations, as well as an extension to the back façade onto the garden for the enjoyment of the sizable back garden as an entertainment space.
The back façade displayed some wonderful architectural features that were respected and emphasized. The extension was restricted to a conservatory / living room at ground floor level, as well as a partial extension of a 3rd bedroom and terrace at first floor level.
Part of the existing loggia was visually rotated at right angles towards the garden, enhancing the axiality of the layout, behind which a new structure predominantly in raw timber was extended out onto the garden space.
The effect of the rotation of the loggia was to blend in the volumes better within the existing structure. The same timber screen was used in the first floor extension, for the balancing out of volumetry.
The central passage in the garden was redone and a swimming pool, BBQ & deck area were introduced.
