On a site in Ingolstadt, the existing housing slabs from the 1930s are
going to be demolished. A new appartment building adjacent to the road
will form the north-western border of the plot. The former
typology of housing slabs with its east-west orientation makes sense in
terms of daylight but restricts the view to the nearby riverbank of the
Danube in the south. By cutting the slabs into smaller pieces we create
more appartments with not only a view but also south-facing balconies.
Inbetween the new houses we generate a variety of different squares and
zones suitable for playgrounds, gardens and leisure activities,
especially for young families. All appartments are connected to an
underground parking. As the developer did not want to have flat
roofs, we adapted the eaves heights according to the maximum allowed
distance to the neighbouring buildings. As a result, we accomplish a
loose structure of rather small and compact houses instead of a strict
alignment of monotone slabs.
