The client, Infinite Scale Design Group, is a design consultancy that specializes in EGD (Environmental Graphic Design) for sports clients nationally and internationally. Atlas Architects helped the client secure the property through a proposal process with the city. Challenges to the project included an actively evolving zoning ordinance, abutting a residential zone with sensitivity on a small infill lot, and a 6 week complete redesign of the building due to a change of fire code and rapidly escalating building costs. Additionally, the building was sited to avoid occlusion of solar access and views for neighbors.
Infinite Scale, at the time, had about 25 employees and wanted a home that could accommodate future growth of up to 50%. Programming elements included offices, charette space, mock-up areas, and informal amenity spaces – both inside and out. The layout of the building allows for redistributing studio and management space to accommodate the needs of their project mix at any given time. Drawing from the language of sports and athletic venues in general, the detailing expression of concrete, steel and glass are evocative of these sport typologies, but have been refined to be compatible with the more comfortable environs of an office setting for employees and guests. The main conference room on the second level, with its outdoor veranda, is referential to the private suites at many sports venues, but in this case taking in an uninterrupted view of the Wasatch Mountain Range. All of these aspects are enhanced by the application of sports memorabilia and graphics collected and implemented in their client’s projects. Color selections for the project were driven by the client’s own branding.
