The challenge was to make room for a small production facility in the hearth of Saschiz, a UNESCO World Heritage site, that produces syrup and jam.
The shape and style where born after a careful study of the local sheds. It harmonizes with the traditional shape and position in respect to the house and yard all the while making the modernity of the structure clearly obvious.
The interior houses the showers and dressing rooms for the workers as well as the production facility itself together with the cold-rooms for the storage of the finite product.
The structure is extremely energy efficient due to some clever usage of traditional and modern technologies. The walls are made from ceramic brick (the traditional building material of the area - readily available on location) doubled with a modern mineral fiber insulation that is ventilated and hidden beneath a wood facade (inspired by the traditional aspect of the local sheds).
The interior is full height and lighting is done by skylights to make smart use of natural lighting, shades making for good thermal control during winter.
