This Laboratory Incubator is dedicated to developing new technology based companies and further augments research activity in Bloomington. It supports the University’s research and life science missions and fosters business activity that will benefit the local community and the state of Indiana. It provides 1,500 SF or more of office, dry lab or wet lab space to these new companies, and can be built out quickly and are flexible in use.
Rooms in the building include a large meeting room, office space, Pervasive Technology Laboratory (with Advanced Network Management (ANM) space and office space), leasable dry labs, leasable wet labs, and wet lab support. The second floor wet labs are grouped together to provide the flexibility to lease individually or as larger lab spaces, as they can easily be subdivided to lease in increments of 300 SF. The structure is designed for heavy research work and vibration sensitive equipment.
The simple building form conveys a straight-forward organizational layout with a central circulation spine/core element that anchors the north and south wings (each of which are subtle variations on a theme). The main entrance, located at the NE corner of the building, creates a dramatic and transparent entry/lobby element to both invite and engage staff and visitors to the facility; while still accommodating a future 30,000 GSF eastern expansion.
The design respects the precinct master plan and adjacent buildings in terms of orientation, scale, and general layout, and is LEED Silver certified. BSA LifeStructures teamed with Messer Construction for this design-build project.
